Hill, Miller Lead Redbirds at Fighting Camel Spring Classic

Feb. 25, 2008

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Led by junior co-captain Marci Hill and sophomore Stacey Miller, the Illinois State women's golf team stands in fourth place following day-one action at the Fighting Camel Spring Classic hosted by Campbell University at the par-72, 6,012-yard Keith Hills Country Club.

Hill and Miller fired matching 78's and stand just four strokes behind individual leaders Maite Ortiz dePinedo and Balen Diaz Cisneros of Campbell and Samantha Widmer of Elon.

"Stacey and Marci really stepped up for us today and played well," said head coach Darby Sligh. "We did some things right today as a team, but it is tough to get back into the swing of things after having to be inside all winter."

As a team, the Redbirds recorded a day-one-team-total of 321. Host Campbell leads the 15-team event by 14-strokes after tallying a day-one-team-total of 301.

One other Redbird finished the day in the top-20 as true freshman Terra Miller posted a day-one-total of 80.

Sligh feels her team can make progress up the leaderboad in round two.

"I think it is great for the girls to get out on real grass and compete," said Sligh. "I did not want to put too much pressure on them in the first tournament so hopefully this will help us gear up for our spring break tournament."

The Fighting Camel Spring Classic will conclude with the final 18 holes being played Tuesday, with a shotgun start set for a 9 a.m.
