Mayfield Joins Redbird Track and Field Team

Aug. 12, 2009

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's track and field team has added another student-athlete to the team for the 2009-10 season, as Julian Mayfield decided to continue his athletic and academic careers at Illinois State. Mayfield attended Rock Island High School and competed in jumping events.

Head track and field coach Elvis Forde feels that Mayfield will be a strong asset to the men's jumping squad.

"Julian wanted to play basketball, but he was a state champion in track," said Forde. "He had a great long jump and triple jump, and he is fairly young to the sport. He has competed in track for two years. We believe his physical attributes will allow him to be one of the top long jump and triple jump guys. He is going to be good competition for the Redbird jumpers. I think he could become a top jumper by the end of his first year here."

Mayfield was the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Class AA state champion in the triple jump his senior year. Mayfield recorded a jump of 47-02.50 to win the title, and qualified to compete in the long jump, but did not advance to the finals.

The Rock Island, Ill., native was a member of the Rock Island team that took fifth place at the state meet with 37 points.
