ST. LOUIS, Mo. -
Illinois State junior track and field thrower Colin Fane was one of ten Missouri Valley Conference student-athletes named a State Farm Good Neighbor Award recipient by MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin Thursday.
In an effort to honor model student-athletes, the Missouri Valley Conference, in partnership with State Farm, created the MVC State Farm Good Neighbor Award. In order to be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition. The Valley recognizes 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees. Institutions select their Good Neighbor Award honorees.
Fane, a native of Sterling, Ill., is a three-year letterwinner for the Redbirds in track and field and carries a 3.35 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) in elementary education. He is also a five-time member of the AFNI Honor Roll at Illinois State and is a Missouri Valley Conference Honor Roll member.
In addition to his work on the track and in the classroom, Fane is an active participant in the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) at Illinois State where he has served as an officer since 2008. Fane is also very active in the community and has volunteered his time developing and implementing the Recess Buddy Program and has worked with the State Farm/MVC Just Read Program, American Red Cross Evening With the Stars, `Birds in the Burbs, Audubon Society, The Festival of Trees and Children's Discovery Museum Sibling Play Day.
State Farm Insurance is a long-time sponsor of the Missouri Valley Conference and sponsors all 18 MVC championship events. Also, State Farm is a prominent sponsor of the league's television network and a sponsor of the Missouri Valley Conference's community outreach program, "Just Read!"
