Women's Golf in Sixth Place After Day One of Badger Invite

Sept. 25, 2011

Madison, Wis. - On a rain shortened afternoon the Illinois State women's golf team finished the first day in sixth place.

Play was suspended during the second round with thunderstorms in the Madison, Wis. area. Play resumed for only an hour before the day was called due to darkness. Teams will finish their remaining holes of the second round before concluding their final 18-holes tomorrow with an 8 a.m. start.

Junior Katie Jean paced the Redbirds by shooting a 5-over-par through the first round and 14 holes to put her in a tie for fifth place. Sophomore Rachel Powers is in a tie for 22nd place after shooting 12-over-par on the day. Senior Hannah Bachman is tied for 26th at 13-over-par after her first round and will have three holes remaining in her second round tomorrow. Sophomore Brianna Cooper is tied for 29th place after an afternoon where she shot 13-over-par. Sophomore Jordyn Wyzgowski fired 17-over-par on the day putting her in sole possession of 39th.

"Today was a team effort and I'm proud of the way we held it together despite terrible conditions," said head coach Darby Sligh. "Katie showed immense heart today and I can't explain how excited I am to see her scoring well. We are finishing up today's round in the morning and I am looking for us to find momentum early and finish well."

The host Badgers lead the tournament, followed by Southern Methodist with Georgetown in third. Valley rival Drake is tied for fourth position with North Dakota State. Illinois State is in sixth position trailing both Drake and North Dakota State by a single stroke.
