NORMAL, Ill. - After two rounds of play, the Illinois State women's golf team sits in third place with a team score of 615 (300-315), driven by an impressive outing from senior Katie Jean at the Redbird Invitational Saturday at Weibring Golf Club. The Redbird's performance was bested only by Bowling Green State (613) and Toledo (610).
Head Coach Darby Sligh felt that her team got off to a strong start.
"Today was a great start for us," Sligh explained. "We lost some momentum in the backstretch of the second round, and we need to do a better job of staying in the moment. I'm proud of Katie and her efforts today and look forward to seeing how our team responds to tomorrow's round."
In the first round, Jean shot 2-under-par (70), while tallying a score of 75 in the second round to top the leaderboard at the end of day one. Junior Rachel Powers also added a solid performance to Illinois State's run at defending its Redbird Invitational title by finishing with a score of 153 (74-79), which puts her in a tie for 13th place.
Junior Jordyn Wyzgowski shot a two round score of 158 (77-81), shooting one stroke better than sophomore Hayley Guyton, who finished the day with a score of 159 (79-80). Wyzgowski and Guyton finished tied for 31st and 33rd, respectively. Rounding out the Redbird lineup was junior Carlee Cossell, who shot 171 (86-85).
Freshman Courtnee Cossell debuted in her first-colligate match by competing as an individual, finishing with a score of 166 (83-83).
ISU looks to take a fourth-consecutive Redbird Invitational victory in the third and final round of play tomorrow, beginning at 8:30 a.m., with a shotgun start.
