NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – The Illinois State women's golf team concluded day one at the Hoosier Fall Invitational in Noblesville, Indiana, finishing in fifth place during stroke play with a team score of 315 Friday afternoon. Senior Brianna Cooper led ISU as the only Redbird to finish in the top-10 on the individual leaderboard, shooting 2-over-par with a score of 74, tying for fifth place. Illinois State's fifth-place team finish in stroke play gives the Redbirds the No. 5 seed in match play, which begins Saturday.
Head coach Darby Sligh is content where Illinois State sits after stroke play.
"We fell short of our expectations, but all was not lost" Sligh said. "We squeezed out a few really solid teams to lock up the fifth seed for Saturday against Fresno State. They are a very talented team, but I like our match-ups. We need to play with a lot of heart, and it's time to put it all together."
Senior Lauren English shot a 6-over-par in Friday's stroke play event with a score of 78, tying for 17th place. Freshman Kiley Walsh, senior Hayley Guyton and sophomore Maggie Ambrose ended the day close together with scores of 81, 82 and 83, respectively.
Junior Courtnee Cossell competed as an individual Friday, finishing stroke play in 51st place with a score of 88.
After day one of the Hoosier Fall Invitational, Indiana sits in first place with a team score of 299 with Eastern Michigan not far behind, carding a team score of 300 for second place. Rounding out the top-three teams is Illinois, carding a day-one score of 302.
Illinois State will try to climb the leaderboard on the second day of the event Saturday, beginning at 7:30 a.m. (CST) with tee times.
