NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – The Illinois State women's golf team concluded day two at the Hoosier Fall Invitational in Noblesville, Indiana, Saturday, completing the first two rounds of match play. The Redbirds fell to Fresno State during the first round, before regrouping to defeat Eastern Michigan in the second round.
Head coach Darby Sligh was pleased with her team's performance and hopes for a strong finish Sunday.
"We played our hearts out," Sligh said. "We lost the morning match up on the final holes and came back in the afternoon, from being down, to clench the match against Eastern Michigan. Saturday's weather was some of the worst we will ever have to play in with rain, driving wind and temperatures in the 40s. Our attitudes were on point, and we bounced back. Lauren (English) secured two points for us and led us out of both rounds. We are excited to get back out there against Boston College. A win would be a great way to end our fall season."
In round one of match play, Illinois State fell short, as it competed against Fresno State and ended with a score of 4-1. English beat her Fresno State competitor, 3-2, while freshman Kiley Walsh (1-up), senior Hayley Guyton (4-up), sophomore Maggie Ambrose (5-and-3) and senior Brianna Cooper (1-up) were all defeated by their Fresno State competitors.
After round one, Illinois State was in the consolation bracket against Eastern Michigan for the second round, where the Redbirds won, 3-2. English (2-up) and Cooper (3-up) defeated their EMU opponents, while Walsh grabbed the win off of a withdrawal.
The final round of match play will begin Sunday at 8:30 a.m. (CST), where the Redbirds hope to climb the leaderboard.
