SPRINGFEILD, Ill. -Â The Illinois State women's golf team concluded day two of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Monday with a team score of 606 (297-309), finishing the day fourth overall at the Panther Creek Country Club.
Head coach Darby Sligh was not thrilled with the abrasive weather conditions, but is happy that her team was able to stay in contention heading into the final round.
"Monday was tough battling rain and wind, but we ended up doing enough to stay in the hunt," Sligh said. "There are many teams within reach, so Tuesday will be an important day to bring the best we have. We need to stay focused on the things we can control. We love being in contention and will lean on our past successes to pull us through."
Senior Rachel Powers (73-74) and junior Hayley Guyton (74-76) led the team with a score of 150, both tying for ninth overall. Just two strokes behind was senior and Brianna Cooper, who carded a 156 (76-76) and tied for 18th place.
Senior Lauren English was just four strokes behind the Redbird leaders with a 154 (74-80) and tying for 26th. Rounding out the lineup was senior Jordyn Wyzgowski, who carded a two-round score of 164 (83-81).
Illinois State rival and host school, Bradley, continues to sit in first place with a combined team score of 599 (293-306). Wichita State was able to advance to second place with a score of 601 (297-304), just two strokes ahead of the third place Indiana State 603 (296-307).
ISU looks to win it all in the third and final round of play Tuesday, beginning at 9 a.m. (CST), with a shotgun start.Â
