NORMAL, Ill. -Â Wichita State (28-26, 12-8 MVC) scored twice in the fifth inning to top Illinois State (30-20, 10-10 MVC) Friday night at Duffy Bass Field. The loss secured a series-win for Wichita State.
Sam Tewes (8-3) worked six innings of one-run ball and struck out five for the win. Cale Elam (1) pitched two scoreless innings for the save. Dylan Craig fired four scoreless innings for Illinois State in a no-decision, but Will Headean (3-3) was tagged for two runs over three innings to suffer the defeat. Jeremy Rhoades worked the final two innings for Illinois State and notched a pair of strikeouts.
Mason Snyder's two-out double in the second inning gave Illinois State its first base runner of the game. Following a walk to Joe Kelch, Dennis Colon slapped a run-scoring single to right field to give Illinois State an early lead, 1-0. It would be all the scoring ISU would muster in the game.
Craig worked out of trouble in the second and third innings to preserve the 1-0 ISU lead. In the fifth inning, Headean walked two and Wichita State scored on a wild pitch and a RBI-knock from Dayne Parker.
The Redbirds stranded six runners in the game.
