Redbirds Ready to Compete in MVC Championship

The Redbirds will look to win their sixth Valley championship in the last seven years.

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's golf team will compete in the 2014 Missouri Valley Conference Championship April 20-23, at the Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield, Ill. The Redbirds will look to win their sixth Valley championship in the last seven years.

"It's time to put it all together this weekend, and we are so excited to be in a position to defend our title," head coach Darby Sligh said. "It will take the entire team coming together at the right time to make it happen, and I think we are ready to put our plan into action."

Sligh will stick with her upperclassman lineup of seniors Rachel Powers and Jordyn Wyzgowski, along with juniors Brianna Cooper, Hayley Guyton and Lauren English. This will mark the third time this season that all five athletes have competed on the field together.

Illinois State was tabbed in a recent coach's poll to finish tied for fourth in the tournament. In the same poll, MVC powerhouse Wichita State was picked to win the tournament.

Prominent Illinois State rival, Bradley, will serve as host institution and the winner will receive an automatic bid to advance to the NCAA regionals.

The first round will begin with a shotgun start Sunday morning at 9 a.m. (CST), with the final 36 holes being played across Monday's second round and Tuesday's final round also beginning at 9 a.m. (CST) with a shotgun start.
