Redbirds Place Third at MVC Championship

The Redbirds were able to edge out Southern Illinois (908) and Bradley (909) for the third-place spot.

SPRINGFEILD, Ill. - The Illinois State women's golf team concluded the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Tuesday with a team score of 906 (297-309-300), finishing the tournament third overall at the Panther Creek Country Club.

"It's hard to see this season end," head coach Darby Sligh said. "We started out too slow this morning to be victorious, but we ended up making 10 birdies in the middle of the round to have a chance in the end. I was so proud of the grittiness they showed Tuesday. I will greatly miss this group of seniors and am so proud to coach this team. I think there was a lot learned today to spring forward with a fire in our bellies to come back out on top next year."

Seniors Rachel Powers 223 (73-74-73) and Brianna Cooper 223 (76-76-71) led the team with nine birdies between them, both tying for seventh overall on the leaderboard.

Junior Hayley Guyton carded a 231 (74-76-81), tying for 23rd place. Senior Lauren English was just one stroke behind with a 232 (74-80-78), tying for 26th. Rounding out the lineup was senior Jordyn Wyzgowski, who carded a three-round score of 242 (83-81-76), improving to a tie for 40th.

Wichita State was able to advance to first place with a combined team score of 900 (297-306-299). Indiana State finished, just one stroke behind, in second with a score of 901 (296-307-298). The Redbirds were able to edge out Southern Illinois (908) and Bradley (909) for the third-place spot.

Look for Illinois State to return at the start of the 2014-15 season in September.
