WOLCOTT, Colo. – The Illinois State women's golf team concluded day two of the competitive Golfweek Challenge Tuesday with a team score of 628 (307-321), tying for 12th place overall at the Red Sky Golf Club. Seniors Brianna Cooper and Hayley Guyton led the Redbirds in the second round of play.
Cooper continued her strong play, as shot four more birdies Tuesday for a 2-over-par 74 and currently sits in fifth place overall on the individual leaderboard with a final score of 145. Guyton had one birdie during the second day of competition, giving her a 78 at the end of the second round and a 36-hole score of 159.
Head coach Darby Sligh knows it was a tough day and pointed out that adjustments need to be made during the final round.
"We didn't play very well today, which is disappointing after putting ourselves in a good position," Sligh said. "We know where we made our mistakes, and it's important that we fix them Wednesday and move forward. Hayley and Brianna held us together, and I hope their solid play continues."
Also competing with the Redbirds is senior Lauren English, who shot an 84 in the second round, while sophomore Maggie Ambrose and freshman Abby Luchtenburg both finished the day shooting an 85.
After the second round of play, Tennessee and Pepperdine are tied for first place each with a team score of 582, while Campbell remains in third place with a team score of 592 to round out the top-three teams.
Illinois State moved down the leaderboard in the second round, but will hope to move up in the third and final round Wednesday, which will begin at 10:30 a.m. (CST) with a shotgun start.
