NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State men's tennis team recorded an overall 2-4 mark at opening day of match play at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma Saturday.
"We had some real tough competition today," Illinois State head coach Mark Klysner said. "Even though collectively we didn't play our best tennis, it was still great to play some of the best teams in the country."
One Redbird that stood out at the ITA All-American Championships was senior Jacob Wilson. Wilson defeated Purdue's Diego Acosta, 6-2, 6-3, and Memphis' Patrick Mayer, 7-6(8), 6-4. Wilson will continue to play at the third round of the pre-qualifying matches at 8 a.m. tomorrow.
Illinois State also continued singles play at the Western Michigan Vredevelt on Saturday, highlighted by sophomore Urh Krajnc Domiter who defeated Notre Dame's Eddy Covalsch in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
"That's a great win for [Krajnc Domiter]," Klysner said. "I was happy to see the guys come out stronger today in singles and pull out some big wins."
Freshman Andreas Boers also had a good day for the Redbirds, losing his first singles match to Wisconsin Green Bay's Jorge Soler, 6-2, 6-3, but defeating Western Michigan's Jimmy Beckwith, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, to advance to Flight D's consolation final on Sunday at 9 a.m.
The Redbirds will finish play at the Western Michigan Vredevelt Invitational on Sunday while the ITA All-American Championships will continue pre-qualifying rounds starting at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
