COLUMBIA, MO. – The Illinois State women's golf team concluded day one at the Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia Missouri, finishing in 11th place with an two-round team score of 614 (311-303) Monday. Senior Hayley Guyton led the Redbirds, shooting 1-under-par with four birdies in the second round, ending the day in 34th place with a score of 150 (79-71).
Head coach Darby Sligh was happy about Guyton's stellar performance in the second round.
"We had bright spots here and there, but not a real solid team effort in great scoring conditions" Sligh said. "I'm so excited for Hayley to have broken through. Tuesday will be a day for us to let go and play fearless golf."
Senior Brianna Cooper wasn't far behind Guyton carding two more strokes, giving her a two-round score of 152 (77-75). Senior Lauren English finished each round with a 5-over-par 77, firing a two-round score of 154. Sophomore Maggie Ambrose and freshman Abby Luchtenburg rounded up the Redbird team line up, scoring 158 (78-80) and 164 (80-84), respectively.
Freshman Kiley Walsh, competing as an individual for the Redbirds, shot two birdies in the first round carding a two-round score of 159 (77-82).
After the first two rounds of play Missouri sits in first place with a team score of 562 (282-280) with Kansas State not far behind, carding a two-round score of 565 (280-285) for second place. Rounding out the top-three teams is FIU, finishing the day with a score of 572 (288-284).
Illinois State will try to climb the leaderboard in the final round of play Tuesday, beginning at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.
