STILLWATER, Oklahoma – The Illinois State men's tennis team wrapped up its first weekend of spring play in Stillwater on Sunday with a loss to Oklahoma State, 5-1.
Redbirds senior Muddappa Appanervanda and junior Rodrigo Oliveira defeated the Cowboys' Nicolai Ferrigno and Lukas Finzelberg in their doubles match, 7-6, while sophomore Urh Krajnc Domiter and freshman Andreas Boers beat Trent Botha and Tristan Meraut, 7-5, to seal the doubles point.
"I was really pleased with the energy and fire we showed in the doubles today," said head coach Mark Klysner. "We came out intense and it showed in taking that point."
Illinois State (1-3), however, struggled in singles play Sunday, losing all five of its matches to Oklahoma State (2-0). Junior Jakub Eisner suffered his defeat to Jakob Sude, 6-2, 6-1, while Meraut picked up a singles win over ISU senior Jacob Wilson, 6-0, 6-0. Junior Rolando Torrellas, freshman Christoffer Greve, and Krajnc also lost in their singles matches Sunday.
"Singles was a tough battle," said Klysner. "Our guys fought hard, Oklahoma State just played the deuce points better than us."
The Redbirds will be back in action next Saturday in Fort Wayne, Indiana to take on Chicago State at 4 p.m. and then IPFW at 7 p.m.
