NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State women's golf team will head to Venice, Fla., for its season opener, competing in the seventh-annual Illinois Challenge Sunday. The event will be played at the par-72, 6,180-yard Venice Golf and Country Club and will feature a dual meet against in-state rival Illinois.
At the challenge, the teams will compete in four ball matches, and then golfers from each school will go head-to-head in the individual matches in an all-day event.
Head coach Darby Sligh is excited to begin the spring season with this challenge and feels the team is prepared to bring home a win.
"Each year, this weekend brings so much excitement to what we are accomplishing as a team," Sligh said. "It allows us to get a break from winter to train and compete on grass in our preseason. The partner format in the morning brings a sense of camaraderie to the pairs and allows us to take advantage of our team chemistry. We have gotten great preparation in, and we are ready to spend some time on grass."
Competing for Illinois State will be seniors Brianna Cooper, Lauren English and Hayley Guyton. Junior Courtnee Cossell, sophomores Maggie Ambrose and Renee Solberg, and freshmen Abby Luchtenburg and Kiley Walsh will round out the Redbird line up in this weekend's match.
