PINEHURST, N.C. –After two rounds of play at the Pinehurst Challenge in Pinehurst, North Carolina, at the Pinehurst No. 1 Course, the Illinois State women's golf team sits in a tie for 17th place. The Redbirds shot a day one score of 617 (314-303).
Leading the way for the Redbirds was Kiley Walsh, who shot an individual score of 1-over-par 145 (73-72) after two rounds, and is tied for 24th on the individual leaderboard. Caitlin Simms sits in a tie for 71st with a two-round score of 152 (77-75).
"Monday was the day that could have been," head coach Darby Sligh said. "The mental side of our journey this year has been a slow go, but we are starting to see pay-offs. We had a great comeback in the afternoon as a team. Kiley and Caitlin played very well, and I'm excited to see how we finish on Tuesday."
Courtnee Cossell shot a 159 (81-78), placing her in a tie for 92nd, while Maggie Ambrose ended the day with a two-round score of 161 (83-78). Renee Solberg rounded out the Redbird line-up with rounds of 84 and 79 for a total score of 163.
Leading the field was East Carolina with a score of 570 (287-283), while Iowa is in second with rounds of 288 and 285 for a total of 573. Chattanooga (287-288) and Elon (295-280) are currently tied in third place with a day one score of 575.
Sitting in the number one spot on the individual leaderboard is William & Mary's Alessandra Liu, who shot a tournament-low round of 65 in the second round. Liu's 65 is the lowest-tournament round of the Pinehurst Challenge, when being played at the No. 1 Course.
The Pinehurst Challenge concludes Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. (CT) with a shotgun start for the tournament's final round.
