PINEHURST, N.C. –After three rounds of golf Monday and Tuesday, the Illinois State women's golf team finished 19th with a score of 932 (314-303-315) at the Pinehurst Challenge in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The tournament was hosted by College of Charleston and held at No. 1 Course. Kiley Walsh led the way for the Redbirds, as she did throughout the season, compiling an individual score of 3-over-par 219 (73-72-74), finishing tied for 29th on the individual leaderboard.
ISU head coach Darby Sligh commented on the season thus far at the conclusion of the tournament.
"We have a huge bright spot in our program right now, and her name is Kiley Walsh," Sligh stated. "She played so solidly for three rounds. She continues to push us forward and raise the bar each week. I'm looking forward to moving ahead and getting work in these next few weeks, heading into our winter season. We have a lot of work ahead of us."
Caitlin Simms shot rounds of 77-75-83 for a total individual score of 235, ending the tournament in a tie for 88th place, while Courtnee Cossell shot a score of 238 with rounds of 81-78-79, placing her in a tie for 94th. Maggie Ambrose scored a total of 240 and finished in a tie for 97th place, and Renee Solberg had an individual score of 246 (84-79-83).
Rounding out the top-three spots on the leaderboard were East Carolina, which clinched their fourth-Pinehurst Challenge title, shooting a score of 857 (287-283-287), Chattanooga with total score of 863 (287-288-288), and Elon, trailing close behind with a score of 866 (295-280-291). William & Mary's Alessandra Liu fired a three-round score of 206, which is a new tournament 54-hole record.
The Redbirds return to action on February 13th, when they fly to the Illinois Challenge in Venice, Florida.
