INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Illinois State women's tennis team earned its first win of the spring season, beating Butler, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the Butler Bubble.
"Today's win was a great team effort," said head coach Maja Kovacek. "Chanel (Scudiero) and Catherine (Shulman) had very competitive matches and played great tennis in key moments. I'm very proud of the team for bouncing back from yesterday' match and getting the win."
In singles competition, junior Kadi Ilves defeated Butler's Bailey Padgett, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 1 flight, while freshman Donna Haycock fell short to Butler's Kylie Havilland, 6-1, 6-1 in No. 2 singles. In No. 3 singles, freshman Catherine Shulman earned a win over Butler's Konstantina Adami, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4, while sophomore Chanel Scudiero also claimed victory over Butler's Kailey Eaton, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2, in No. 4 singles. Freshman Valerija Gercar won in No. 5 singles versus Butler's Angelina Qin, 6-4, 6-4. In No. 6 singles, sophomore Natalia Parchowska fell to Butler's Callie Schmit, 1-6, 7-6(5), 10-8.
In doubles competition, ISU earned the doubles points, as the duo of Ilves and Haycock won the No. 1 flight versus Butler's Havilland and Adami, 6-3. Meanwhile, Shulman and Scudiero earned a win over Butler's Eaton and Padgett, 6-2, in No. 2 doubles. In No. 3 doubles, the duo of Parchowska and Gercar suffered a loss by Butler's Qin and Michelle McFerran, 6-2.
Next up, the Redbirds will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska, to compete against Wyoming on Saturday, February 21 and versus Nebraska Sunday, February 22. Both competitions will begin at 11 a.m.
