NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State men's tennis team will begin their spring season at the Evergreen Racquet Club Saturday at home as they face Chicago State and Green Bay.
"We are excited to get the spring started, for sure," said head coach Mark Klysner. "It's been a nice break, and the guys have had time to get healthy, so we have high hopes for this season. This weekend will be a tough challenge for the boys. UW Green Bay is one of the top teams in the Horizon League, and so, I expect us to battle with them. Chicago State has some new players whom I'm not familiar with, so that could make things interesting. Either way, we will be ready and are anxious to get it going."
The Redbirds are coming back from a fall season in which they established a 25-29 singles record and a 9-11 doubles mark. Sophomore Christoffer Greve drew attention in the fall by going undefeated for the majority of the season. He had a 6-3 singles record and a 5-3 doubles mark with partner Dylan Steffens. Steffens also earned a strong singles record, going 7-5 in the fall season.
Another player to watch this season is captain Rolando Torrellas. Torrellas went undefeated in limited singles action during the fall, earning a 3-0 record. The squad will again be looking for leadership from Torrellas and co-captain Jakub Eisner.
The two matches will be held at the Evergreen Racquet Club located at 3203 E. Washington St., Bloomington, Illinois. The first match against Green Bay will be Saturday at 1 p.m. The Chicago State match will follow at 6 p.m. Follow @RedbirdMTEN on Twitter for updates throughout this Saturday's matches.
