MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Illinois State men's tennis team defeated Army on Sunday, 5-2, to improve its overall record to 5-5.
"This was a great way to finish the trip with one of our better efforts thus far," said head coach
Mark Klysner. "We played an obviously disciplined Army team that took us in the doubles point, but how the guys fought back in singles and controlled each court by playing smart, conscientious tennis was something we've lacked in some of our matches. It feels great to get back on the winning track and we look forward to playing a ranked Wisconsin team later this week."
Illinois State lost the doubles point to Army to start the matchup. The tides would quickly change, however, in singles competition.
Jakub Eisner defeated Kyle Barnes, 6-3, 6-3, in No. 2 singles.
Rodrigo Oliveira competed in the No. 3 dual singles slot and bested Harrison McCormick, 7-5, 6-1.
Christoffer Greve remained undefeated in dual singles competition and is now 10-0 this spring. Greve competed in No. 4 singles to defeat Michael Nguyen, 6-0, 6-1. Greve holds an overall 16-3 singles record for the season.
Andreas Boers bested No. 5 singles opponent Austin McCasin in a close bout, 7-5, 6-4. Teammate
Dylan Steffens also had a close match with No. 6 dual singles challenger Michael Sienko, resulting in a tie-breaker victory for Steffens, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
The Redbirds will play next on Thursday, March 3 as they face Wisconsin, in Madison, Wisconsin, at 6 p.m.
