ISU Makes History with, 7-0 Win Over Chicago State

RESULTS

NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State women's tennis team swept Chicago State, 7-0, in its first road match, improving to 4-0 on the spring season for the first time in program history and the first time overall since 1990-91 when the Redbirds went 4-0 to open their fall season.

"We weren't as sharp in doubles today, but we played solid singles and didn't allow our opponents many opportunities," said head coach Maja Kovacek. "I'm really proud of our effort this weekend, we had several players struggling with injuries who really came through for us."

For the third time this season ISU went 3-0 in doubles action, to earn the doubles point for its fourth-straight match. The Redbird duo of Veronika Golanova and Jana Kustkova swept Bryttish Burts and Lorea Gamboa of Chicago State, 6-0. Marcia Tere-Apisah and Kadi Ilves earned their second-straight doubles win this weekend by defeating Chicago State's Hanna Pangestu and Marnie Perez-Ochoa, 7-5. To conclude doubles action, Chanel Scudiero and Catherine Shulman paired up to beat Leshia Gadacz and Monica Pulgar, 7-5.

The Redbirds carried their momentum into singles play, going a perfect 6-0. Tere-Apisah won her fourth-straight No. 1 singles match, defeating her opponent Hanna Pangestu in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Ilves topped Leshia Gadacz, 6-4, 6-1 in No. 4 singles to improve to 3-0 in singles for the season. Shulman proved to be determined, winning her singles match against Bryttish Burts, 6-1, 6-1. Scudiero dominated her opponent, winning her match against Monica Pulgar, 6-2, 6-4. Also notching singles wins and overcoming their respective opponents were Golanova and Kustkova. Five Redbirds remain undefeated on the season in singles action: Valerija Gercar, Ilves, Paulson, Shulman and Tere-Apisah.

Through its first four matches ISU is 21-3 in singles, 11-1 in doubles and 4-0 overall.

The Redbirds will head to Iowa City next weekend to face Iowa and UMKC in a double header Saturday. The team will then return home the following weekend to host Indianapolis (Feb. 20) and Butler (Feb. 21). For updates on ISU women's tennis, follow them on Twitter: @RedbirdWTEN.
