BOSTON, Mass. – The Illinois State men's tennis team defeated Boston on Sunday, 6-1.
"I am really pleased with the intensity and focus we showed today," said head coach
Mark Klysner. "It's always nice to end a trip with a win and the guys played very well across the board."
Competition started off with an early lead for the Redbirds, with all three doubles teams winning, earning the doubles point. The No. 1 doubles team of
Andreas Boers and
Jakub Eisner defeated Jake Devries and Jay Leelavanich, 6-4. No. 2 doubles was won by
Urh Krajnc Domiter and
Egehan Sertkaya who bested opponents Miguel Cepeda and Stefan Lemire, 7-5. The doubles victory was sealed by the twosome of
Dylan Steffens and
Christoffer Greve who defeated Mario Sandoval and Lucas Bombonatti, 6-4. Partners, Steffens and Greve, lead the team in doubles 7-6, and have a season record of 12-9. They also lead the team in singles victories.
Steffens defeated Devries in No. 6 singles action, 6-1, 6-3, to bring his record to 14-1, with a season record of 21-6. Greve tallied another No. 4 singles victory defeating Satyajit Simhadri in a tie-breaking third set, 6-4, 1-6, 6-0. Greve has the second most victories behind partner Steffen with a 12-3 dual singles record and a season record of 18-6.
Teammate and returning Redbird this season, Domiter defeated Jay Leelavanich in No. 1 singles competition, 6-4, 6-1. In No. 3 singles action, Rodrigo Oliveira bested his opponent with a third set victory, 6-4, 1-6, 6-0. The final point for the Redbirds was earned by Boers, as he trounced Mario Sandoval, 6-3, 6-4.
ISU, now 7-9, will play again on Thursday, in Louisville, Kentucky versus Louisville, at 12 p.m.
