CHARLESTON, S.C. – Despite several close matches, the Illinois State women's tennis team (7-4) fell short to Charleston Southern, 7-0 Monday afternoon at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex.
In doubles, Marcia Tere-Apisah and Kadi Ilves suffered a defeat in No. 1 doubles to Charleston Southern's Nicolin Luecke and Valeria Koussenkova, 6-4. In No. 2 doubles, Veronika Golanova and Jana Kustkova lost to Brianna Thompson and Kimberley Koerner of Charleston Southern, 6-4. Sarah Paulson and Catherine Shulman were topped in No. 3 doubles, 6-4 by Charleston Southern's Gabriela Srodowski and Sophie Cloessner.
In singles play, Charleston Southern claimed victory in all six flights. In No. 1 singles, Golanova was defeated by Luecke, 6-3, 6-3. Meanwhile, Tere-Apisah was overcome by Cloessner in No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4. Likewise, Kustkova fell to Thompson in No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0. In No. 4 singles, Ilves was topped by Srodowski, 6-4, 6-1. Despite losing the first set to Koerner, 2-6 Valerija Gercar came back to win the second set, 7-6 to force a third set where she fought back and forth, but ultimately fell to Koener, 10-7. In No. 6 singles action, Shulman lost, 6-2, 6-1 to Koussenkova.
It is a quick turnaround for the Redbirds as they will travel to Savannah, Georgia, to take on Savannah State Tuesday (March 8) for match two of three of their spring break trip.
