Redbirds Split Double-Header

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Illinois State split its double-header Wednesday, beating Bethune-Cookman, 6-1, after falling to Appalachian State, 4-0, Wednesday.

"We definitely handled the weather better tonight," said head coach Mark Klysner. "The guys played a lot smarter tennis and it showed in how we constructed points. It was nice to get a win, but more importantly it was nice to see the guys get a little more acclimated to match play outdoors. Tomorrow we play a strong Stetson team, but I think we'll be more prepared to play."

In ISU's win over Bethune-Cookman, Illinois State started the match off by winning the doubles point, as Andreas Boers and Jakub Eisner defeated Alexander Chepik and Greg Almeida, 7-6. The doubles point was clinched by the team of Christoffer Greve and Dylan Steffens which beat the team of Jose Plazas and Alvaro Barrera of Bethune-Cookman, 6-3.

The doubles teams of Boers and Eisner and Greve and Steffens found victory again in singles competition. Eisner competed in No. 2 singles, besting opponent Justin Hall, 6-0, 6-3. Boers competed in No. 5 singles and defeated Alvaro Barrera, 6-4, 6-3.

Greve found his singles magic again, winning in No. 4 singles against Greg Almeida, 6-4, 6-4. Greve extended his singles win record to 11-3 for the spring season. His partner, Steffens, is second in singles wins with a 10-2 mark as he defeated Pablo Lopez, 6-1, 6-3. The final win for Illinois State came from Rodrigo Oliveira, as he bested opponent Jose Plazas in No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-3.

The now, 6-7, Redbirds will continue play Thursday in DeLand, Florida versus Stetson, at 1:30 p.m.
