WGCA Release
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – The Illinois State women's golf team compiled the second-highest grade-point average in the nation, it was announced Wednesday by the Women's Golf Coaches Association.
The Redbirds, who produced a collective average team GPA of 3.862, finished runner up to Lindenwood University's GPA of 3.901. ISU produced the best Division I GPA in the country, ranking ahead of New Mexico, Duke, Denver, Chattanooga, Baylor, East Carolina, Jacksonville, Wichita State, Georgia State, Yale, Minnesota, Creighton, Idaho, Butler and Kentucky, who were all ranked in the top 25.
"It's such an honor to be a part of a national conversation when it comes to academic success," head coach Darby Sligh said. "Even though we came up a few points shy of the title, we broke a few institutional and team records while raising the expectations of future classes of Redbirds. We have an incredible group of dedicated students and support staff, and I couldn't be more proud to see them shine."
Earlier this month, juniors Maggie Ambrose and Renee Solberg, sophomores Abby Luchtenburg and Kiley Walsh, and freshman Caitlin Sims were selected as WGCA All-American Scholars. The quintet was part of the 828-member All-American Scholar Team, as the student-athletes must achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50.
Ambrose has a 3.75 GPA; Solberg has a 3.93 GPA; Luchtenburg has a 3.64 GPA, Walsh has a 3.93 GPA and was voted a First Team All-Missouri Valley Women's Golf Scholar-Athlete while earning All-MVC accolades on the course; and Sims has a 3.72 GPA.
The women's golf team, with a 3.82 GPA in the spring and a 3.91 mark in the fall, topped all ISU teams with its 3.862 cumulative GPA for the 2015-16 academic year.
