PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – The Illinois State women's golf team battled high wind conditions Friday in the first two rounds of the Ball State Sunshine Invitational at the par-72, 6,074-yard St. Lucie Trail Golf Club. The Redbirds sit in seventh place in the 12-team field with a 661, after shooting a 332 in the opening round and a 329 over the second 18 holes. Toledo, who produced a score of 630 (316-314), leads the tournament, six strokes ahead of second-place Southern Illinois.
"Today's windy conditions were a tough way to knock the rust off," head coach Darby Sligh said. "Jumping back into competition exposed many areas of our games and psyches today that need sharpening. We have a lot to digest as a team tonight and can't wait to get back into action tomorrow."
Junior Abby Luchtenburg led the Redbirds over the first 36 holes with a score of 158 (81-77) and sits in a tie for seventh, five strokes out of first place on the individual leaderboard.
Junior Kiley Walsh sits in a tie for 15th place with a 162 (80-82) for a score of 162, placing her in a tie for 15th place, after pacing Illinois State in the opening round. Freshman Paige Seiser, who shot a 92 in the first round, which resulted in her score not counting towards the team's total, bounced back over the second 18 holes to shoot an 80 and construct a 172 (92-80).
Senior Renee Solberg shot a two-round score of 174 (83-91), with her 91 not counting towards the Redbirds' team total in the second round, while sophomore Caitlin Sims tallied rounds of 88 and 90 for a score of 178.
Senior Maggie Ambrose, who is competing as an individual, ended the first 36 holes with a 175 (86-89).
