NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State women's tennis team ended the weekend with a 7-0 sweep over Chicago State Sunday afternoon at the Bloomington Tennis Center.
The Redbirds are now 4-5 in their spring season and have seven more matches before they begin Missouri Valley Conference play.
"We bounced back well today after a tough loss yesterday against Illinois-Chicago," Illinois State head coach Maja Kovacek said. "We played well across the board and didn't allow our opponents many opportunities."
In doubles competition, partners Marcia Tere-Apisah and Jelena Karla Vujicic defeated Mariya Kostyuk and Leshia Gadac, 6-2. Jana Kustkova and Gabriela Sprague defeated Carynne Lloyd and Lorea Gamboa, 6-3. Andrea Beneroso and Valerija Gercar also defeated their opponents Judit Aubets and Hanna Pangestu, 6-3.
In singles play, Tere-Apisah won in straight sets (6-0, 6-0), and did not allow her opponent, Kostyuk to score any points. Vujicic also defeated Gadacz in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Kustkova defeated Lloyd after a tiebreaker match was played, 6-3, 5-7, 10-7. Sprague also won after she played a tiebreaker match. She defeated Gamboa, 6-0, 6-7, 10-3. Gercar defeated Aubets in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Beneroso came out on top against Pangestu, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Next up, the Redbirds will play Eastern Illinois, Feb. 26, in Danville, Illinois. Illinois State will be on the road for the next 10 matches before returning home in April.
