MUNCIE, Ind. – The Illinois State women's tennis team fell at Ball State, 6-1, Saturday.
"We played great doubles today and just barely lost the doubles point," Illinois State head coach Maja Kovacek said. "Marcia Tere-Apisah led the way in singles and I'm really proud of her for bouncing back from her match yesterday, where she struggled."Â
In doubles competition, Tere-Apisah and Jelena Karla Vujicic took home the victory against Ball State's Peyton Gollhofer and Audrey Berger, 6-3. But, the No. 1 double team's victory was not enough to win the the doubles point. Jana Kustkova and Gabriela Sprague were defeated by Rosalinda Calderon and Rebecca Herrington, 6-4. The No. 3 doubles team of Valerija Gercar and Andrea Beneroso also fell short to the Cardinals, 6-3.
Tere-Apisah was a lone winner in singles play for Illinois State. She defeated Gollhofer in two sets, 6-4, 6-2. Vujicic fell short to Carmen Blanco, 6-0, 7-6(3), while Kustkova was also defeated by Isabelle Dohanics, 6-1, 6-2. After Ball State took out its No. 4 singles player, and moved the rest of the players up one in the rotation, Sprague was defeated by Toni Ormond, 6-0, 6-3. Gercar competed against Herrington, and was defeated in two sets, 6-3, 6-3. In No. 5  singles, Beneroso was also defeated by Calderon, 7-5, retire.
Illinois State is now 2-2 after Saturday's match and will have one more day of play Sunday as the Redbirds take on UIndy at 12 p.m. CT.
