BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Junior Kiley Walsh shot a 153 (78-75) Saturday to lead the Illinois State women's golf team over the first two rounds of Indiana's IU Invitational at the par-72, 5,884-yard IU Golf Course.
Walsh fired a 2-under-par 34 on the back nine of the second round, which included three birdies, to close out the day strong to stand in a 14th-place tie on the individual leaderboard. The Redbirds shot a 314 in the first round, before carding a 310 over the second 18 holes to finish with a 624 (314-310). Illinois State sits in fifth place in the 10-team field, with the host's "A" squad leading the way with a 589 (292-297), nine strokes ahead of second-place Western Michigan.
Freshman Paige Seiser and senior Maggie Ambrose both posted 155s Saturday. Seiser shot a 79 in the first round and a 76 (36-40) in the second, which included an even-par 36 on the front nine and three birdies. Ambrose shot a 78 to start the day and finished with a 77 (38-39), including two birdies over the second 18 holes. The duo is currently in a tie for 20th place.
Sophomore Caitlin Sims shot a 162 (79-83), and junior Abby Luchtenburg finished with a 167 (85-82). Senor Renee Solberg, who is playing as an individual, shot a 157 (80-77).
"This was a tough day on the greens for the Birds," head coach Darby Sligh said. "In round one, we simply made too many mistakes, as we left our approaches. We had some good bounce-back rounds in the afternoon, but you have to make more birdies to compete on this golf course. That's what I'm looking for tomorrow, more birdies and less mistakes."
The tournament concludes Sunday with the third and final round beginning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CT.
