NORMAL, Ill. – The Redbirds went 4-1 in singles play and 0-2 in doubles play to start off the first day of MVC Championships. Tara Damnjanovic, Laura Fitzgerald, Estelle Vanthier, and Jana Kustkova will advance to the next round of their respective flights.
"We did not have good performances in doubles today, but I was really happy how we came out determined to bounce back in singles," said Head Coach Maja Kovacek. "Across the board we played some good tennis and we're happy to advance four out of our five players to singles semifinals."
Tara Damnjanovic was the first to strike, beating UNI's Reghan Lynch 6-1 and 6-4. Kustkova was the next on the board, taking down Valparaiso's Meg Modesto 6-4, 6-3 in the third flight. In the fourth flight, Laura Fitzgerald beat Valpo's Olivia Paradise 6-2 and 6-1. Estelle Vanthier rounded it out for the Redbird's, beating Bradley's Victoria Gonzalez 6-1, 5-7, and 7-6(7-5)
The Redbirds will continue tomorrow at 9 a.m. starting with doubles play.
