NORMAL, Ill. – The Redbirds finished the MVC Individual Championships going a perfect 4-0 in singles play and 2-0 in doubles.
Sophomore Estelle Vanthier took home the championship in flight six, defeating UNI's Daisy Phillips 6-3, 4-6, and 6-4. "I'm very happy to be a MVC champion, winning my singles flight at the MVC individuals was always my goal," said Vanthier. "The beginning of the tournament was a little bit rough but my level went up as I won each match. The tournament ended pretty well for me. These past few days were very hard for me, so I'm very happy that I was able to put aside my personal troubles and play a good tennis match."
Tara Damnjanovic, Jana Kustkova, and Laura Fitzgerald all took home third place in their respective flights. Damnjanovic defeated Drake's Carmen Palumbo 6-4,6-3, Kustkova captured a 6-4,4-6, (10-7) victory over Drake's Liza Petushkova and Fitzgerald finished with a 6-7, 6-0, (10-3) win against Sophia Haleas of Drake.
Both doubles teams also won their respective matches, taking home fifth place in flight one and two.
"Estelle showed a lot of mental toughness this week," said Coach Maja Kovacek. "She played some of the best tennis I've seen her play in the final today and I could not be more proud of her."
The Redbirds return to action for the New Mexico Invitational, beginning on Friday, Oct. 26.
