ST. CHARLES, Mo.  – The Illinois State gymnastics team squared off against its foes from the Midwest Independent Conference Friday night, as Lindenwood hosted the 2018 MIC Championships at Hyland Arena.
The host Lions took home the team title with a score of 195.225, followed by Texas Women's in second and UIC in third place. Southeast Missouri State finished ahead of the Redbirds in fourth place, with ISU in fifth with a score of 192.075. Centenary rounded out the competition in sixth place, overall.
The Redbirds were led in the meet by 2018 MIC Gymnast of the Year Gabrielle Cooke, who finished second in the all-around competition with a score of 38.800 behind TWU's Schyler Jones. Cooke tied for second on the floor with a 9.875 and tied for third on vault with a 9.800. Cooke also posted a 9.800 on bars to finish in the top 10, but struggled on the beam which proved to be the difference in the all-around competition.
Katherine Locher joined Cooke in the top 10 during the bars competition, tying for third overall with a 9.825 to pick up All-MIC honors. Alyssa Wiggle, Savannah Remkus and Kylie Meyer each posted scores of 9.700 to tie for 14th overall on beam to round out a balanced rotation for the Redbirds in that event.
Illinois State will now wait to see if any of its individual gymnasts qualify for the upcoming NCAA Regional, with participant lists announced next week.Â
