NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State's women's tennis team took down the Bradley Braves 5-2, in their Missouri Valley Conference home opener.
Doubles team Veronika Golanova and Jelena Karla Vujicic were back together as they defeated Bradley's one doubles team Maletin and Barbery, 6-1. Following their teammates, three doubles duo Valerija Gercar and Estelle Vanthier clinched the doubles point for ISU, defeating Gonzalez and Kovacs, 6-1. Giving the Redbirds their third doubles win of the day was the tandem of Jana Kustkova and Laura Fitzgerald, who took down Wijesinghe and Brawdt, 6-4.
Newcomer Fitzgerald finished first for ISU in the six-singles position defeating Kovacs, 6-2, 6-0. At two singles, Vujicic gave ISU a 3-0 lead, defeating Barbery, 6-3, 6-1. Capturing the match for the Redbirds, Gercar defeated Gonzalez, 6-3. 6-1. Kustkova fell short to Wijesinghe, 6-3, 6-1. At four singles Vanthier was defeated by Brandt, 6-2, 6-2. Golanova claimed the final win of the day at one singles against Maletin, 6-3, 6-3.
After today's match up the Redbirds are currently 1-0 in the MVC and are 10-8 in the regular season. ISU returns to play on Sunday April 8 at 10 a.m. to face off against Missouri State for their second MVC match of the season. The match will be held at the Bloomington Tennis Center, in Bloomington Illinois.
