NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State's women's tennis team took their first Missouri Valley Conference loss today against Drake, 5-2.
One doubles team, Veronika Golanova and Jelena Karla Vujicic fought hard for their chance to win one doubles, but were defeated by T. Herder and L. Petushkova in a close match, 7-6. Doubles duo Jana Kustkova and Ivon Mihaleva were back in action today and took on S. Brills and M. Webb, but fell short 6-4. Three doubles tandem, Valerija Gercar and Laura Fitzgerald faced off against M. Jaglarz and K. Williams in the fight for three doubles, but were defeated 6-3.
At No. five singles Fitzgerald took down M. Webb, 6-2, 6-0, tying up the match 1-1. Vujcic finished next, but fell short to L. Petushkova, 6-1, 6-4. In the six singles spot Vanthier fell short to M. Jaglarz, 7-6, 6-3.
Golanova took S. Brills to three sets after losing the first one, 5-7. She came back and defeated her opponent, 6-3, 6-4. At No. three singles Kustkova also took her opponent to three sets after losing the first set, 6-3. She defeated T. Herder in the second set, 7-6, but fell short in the third set, 6-2. Gercar was the third Redbird to take their opponent to three sets. She ended up falling short to K. Williams, 7-6, 2-6, 6-2.
The Redbirds return to play for their second Missouri Valley Conference matchup of the weekend against UNI tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
