ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Following a stellar performance at the Badger Invitational, Illinois State junior David Perkins has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Golfer of the Week.
Perkins placed in a tie for third place individually, while helping the Redbirds to the Invitational title by four strokes over Kansas and eight strokes over Iowa State.
The East Peoria, Illinois, native stumbled out of the gate, opening the tournament with a two-over 74; however, responded strong as he tied a course collegiate record with a seven-under 65, including a blistering 30 (-6) on the final nine holes of the day. A three-under 69 in the final round put Perkins into the three-way tie, ending the tournament eight shots under par.
The honor is Perkins' fifth of his career, which is the 17th-highest total in MVC history, and second-highest among active Redbird players with senior Trent Wallace leading the way with six over his career. Former standout Matt Miller's nine MVC Player of the Week honors are the high-water mark for the program.
The Redbirds return to action on Sept. 17-18 when the squad travels to Fort Collins, Colorado, to compete in the Ram Masters Invitational, hosted by Colorado State University.
