MALIBU, Calif. - Veronika Golanova fell in the first round of the Oracle ITA Masters (6-2, 6-1) to No. 2 Kate Fahey from Michigan.
Golanova was off to a slow start and faced a 3-0 deficit in the first set, but charged back to win two games. Fahey responded and took the first set with a 6-2 win. The two opened the second set with a 1-1 tie, but Fahey battled to take the next five games to win 6-1.
"Veronika played a tough opponent today and played well," said Coach Maja Kovacek. "She had opportunities and played a closer match than the score suggests. It was a great chance for her to face a Top 20 opponent in national rankings and I'm excited for her to get back out there tomorrow and play another great match."
Golanova also competed with UIW's Gabriel Evans this morning. The duo was selected to play together in the mixed doubles tournament and fell 6-4 to Daniel Cukierman and Salma Ewing.
Golanova will compete again tomorrow and will face St. John's Jessica Livianu. The time for tomorrow's match is to be determined.
