Redbirds Prevail at WashU

ST. LOUIS – The Illinois State swimming and diving team continued their winning ways this weekend, topping Washington of St. Louis (WashU) on Saturday by a final score of 156-142.

Savannah Rubocki kicked off first-place finishes for the Redbirds in the 1,000-yard freestyle event, clocking a time of 10:52.83. The next Illinois State student-athlete to capture a first-place finish was Jensen Keck in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.45. Sarah Hein continued the trend in the 200-yard butterfly with a final time of 2:10.29.

The Redbird relay teams had a successful meet, as the 200-yard medley relay team consisting of Julie Kolar, Keck, Morgan Clark, and Jessica Nichols worked together to turn in a time of 1:49.35. Nichols, Katie Tillotson, Alyssa Reinholz, and Clark captured first-place in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:38.78.

Tillotson captured a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.55), while Kolar finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.99). Keck clocked in a time of 2:23.96 in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Long distance swimmer Morgan Rosser dominated in the 500-yard freestyle, turning in a time of 5:19.27 and teammate Kolar was triumphant in the 200-yard IM, clocking a time of 2:11.06.

"I'm very proud of how the team battled today," said head swimming coach Scott Cameron. "WashU came out very strong and really took it to us early in the meet, but I was very pleased to see the fight the team had as they battled back in the second half of the meet. We had some gritty swims throughout the meet, and it just makes us that much tougher moving forward. Overall I'm very happy with our performance today."

Emily Aument led the way for the Redbirds on the boards, taking first in both the 1-meter (259.55) and 3-meter (248.45) diving events.

"Coming off the long stretch of meets we have had, I am very happy with the divers' performances today and this weekend," said head diving coach Phil Hoffmann. "We had a few personal bests and season bests, and that is a great sign this time of the year."

The Redbird divers will be heading to the UIC Diving Invite on Feb. 2 to close the 2018-19 regular season for Illinois State.
