SHREVEPORT, La. – Illinois State gymnasts Gabrielle Cooke and Savannah Remkus each had strong performances during the opening weekend of competition in 2019, and for their efforts each earned weekly honors from the Midwest Independent Conference on Tuesday.
Cooke, the reigning MIC Gymnast of the Year, was a unanimous choice for Gymnast of the Week and Remkus emerged with the Performance of the Week award in a close vote conducted by the MIC sports information directors. Freshman Alisa Sheremeta of UIC received Newcomer of the Week accolades to round out the first round of weekly plaudits.
Cooke began the season on a high note, winning the all-around competition in the season-opener Friday night at Alaska Anchorage. She picked up event wins on vault (9.775) and floor (9.825) and placed third on beam (9.750) and bars (9.675) to wrap up a strong performance and help the Redbirds defeat the Seawolves. The junior from Chicago, Illinois, followed that up Sunday with a 38.325 in the all-around to finish second, thanks in part to a 9.800 on vault and a 9.850 on floor to take claim two more individual event wins.
The Redbirds, who split the two weekend dual meets in Anchorage, also captured Performance of the Week honors as Remkus set a personal best Sunday on beam with a 9.875 to come away with an event win. The score was the highest individual mark of the weekend for the Redbirds in their two meets against the Seawolves. The Bloomington, Illinois, product also competed on vault and floor in both meets for ISU.
Illinois State returns to action Friday night, when they travel north to face Central Michigan at 7 p.m.
