NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State women's tennis team will travel north to Michigan State University to participate in the 2019 ITA Regionals. The Redbirds will qualify tomorrow, October 17, and will start the main draw on Friday, October 18.
Participating this year for the Redbirds are seniors Natalia Bravo and Jelena Vujicic, junior Laura Fitzgerald and sophomore Tara Damnjanovic. The squad will be playing against tennis players from all over the nation and might have the chance to face off against nationally-ranked opponents for the first time this season.
"I am very excited to get the chance to play at ITA Regionals in Michigan," Laura Fitzgerald commented about her first time being selected. "This will be my first time getting the chance to play and compete. I hope that both myself and my teammates here with me will go out there and give it our all and hopefully that will be enough to get a good start in this tournament."
Last season, both Bravo and Damnjanovic scored a win for the Redbirds at the regional, with Damnjanovic taking down Wisconsin's Maryann Rompf 6-2, 6-3, and the duo taking down Bowling Green's Marta Bettinelli and Vanesa Pardo, 8-4, in doubles action.
"This tournament is the best opportunity to get tough matches in the fall and our players are excited to get out there and compete," ISU head coach Maja Kovacek said about the regional.
The matches will be livestreamed at https://web.playsight.com/facility/michigan-state-university/home with results and brackets being updated daily as well.
