KAPOLEI, Hawai'i – The Illinois State women's golf team stands in 11th place after the first of three rounds at the 2019 Hawai'I Rainbow Wahine Invitational.
Illinois State carded a team score of 306 over the first 18 holes, just behind Incarnate Word (305), host Hawai'I (301) and BYU (300). Sam Houston State leads the field after a round with a one-over 289, while Sacramento State (290), Weber State (294), College of Charleston (296), and Grand Canyon (296) round out the top five schools in the standings.
Leading the way for the Redbirds was freshman Ali Schrock who carded an even-par 72. Schrock and the Redbirds started their round on the 10th hole and opened with a birdie on the par-four 10th hole. She closed the day with three birdies, three bogeys, and a dozen pars.
Senior Becca Black finished five strokes over par with an opening-round 77 including a birdie and 11 pars. Classmate Morgan Savage finished six strokes over par and had a birdie and 13 pars en route to her round that has her tied for 52nd in the field.
Tatum King carded an opening-round 79 (+7) with a birdie and 10 pars, as she is tied at 55th in the individual standings, while Paige Seiser closed out the Redbird scoring five with an eight-over 80.
Playing as individuals, both Emma Sutton and Emma Rouger each had a trio of birdies on the day, with Sutton finishing with a four-over 76 and Rouger a seven-over 79.
The Redbirds and the remainder of the field return to the second of three days of the tournament.
