O'FALLON, Ill. – The Illinois State men's tennis team headed south to collect their first road victory Wednesday, Feb. 27, shutting out Saint Louis 7-0 at the St. Clair Tennis Club.
"I'm happy how we played today," head coach Mark Klysner said. "Doubles is getting better and showing signs of improvement. Now we will get ready for UIC this Saturday."
The 7-0 victory improved the 'Birds' record to 9-3 as they continue on a four-match winning streak.
In doubles, Cameron Petersen and Brandon Lew opened up the game by defeating Ignacio Tintore and Marri. Diego Emilio Moura Herrera and Jorge Adair Bartra Quispe clinched the doubles point with a win over Pavel Badaiants and John Paul McKenzie. Doubles partners, Egehan Sertkaya and and Aleksa Lazarevic rounded out doubles play with a victory against Justin Nogalski and Kenji Yanaba.
After the 1-0 start, Herrera earned the first singles win, competing in the No. 6 spot. In a dominant performance, Sertkaya brought his dual record to 6-2 by overcoming McKenzie. Pol Botifoll Rius clinched the match for the Redbirds, defeating Tintore in flight four of singles. In his first appearance in the No. 3 spot, Lazarevic earned his 10th straight win against Badaiants. Competing in flight two, Quispe topped Yanaba to bring the match to 6-0. Diego Le Gal Perez closed out the match with a win over Nogalski for the 7-0 finish.
The Redbirds will head to Chicago to match up with UIC on Saturday, March 2 at 6 p.m.
