NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State men's tennis team will travel west March 11 through March 14 for matches against Southern Utah, UNLV and UC Riverside.
"This will be a fun week for the guys as they get a break from the classroom, but we have a great opportunity to play some very good teams," head coach Mark Klysner said. "I'm excited to play and see if we can pick up some wins on this trip."
The 'Birds head into the week 10-3 overall with a 2-1 record on the road. In their last match, the team overcame UIC, 4-3, in Chicago. Jorge Adair Bartra Quispe clinched the match in the No. 3 spot after a back-and-forth battle with the Flames.
In the first match of the trip, the Redbirds will face Southern Utah on Monday, March 11 at 1 p.m. CT. Southern Utah came up short against Northern Arizona, 2-5, in their last showing, claiming singles victories behind Shin and Cope. The Thunderbirds posted an 8-4 record thus far into the season.
Illinois State will continue their spring break trip with play against UNLV on Tuesday, March 12 at 11 a.m. CT in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Rebels, who are 8-3 overall dropped their previous match to Denver, 1-4. The sole scorer was Jordan Sauer, who downed Denver's Pedro Del Valle in the third spot of singles.
After a day off, the Redbirds will finish up the week in Riverside, California, competing against UC Riverside on Thursday, March 14 at 10 a.m. CT. The Highlanders swept their doubleheader at home last weekend. UC Riverside continued their win streak, besting Villanova, 4-3, and Hope International, 5-2. The pair of wins extended their win streak to four matches.
The Redbirds will continue their road trip in Grand Forks, North Dakota for a match with UND on Saturday, March 23, with first serve set for 5 p.m. CT.
