NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State Women's tennis team takes on Northern Iowa and Drake in the last matchups of the regular season this weekend. The Redbirds take on UNI Saturday, April 20 at 1 p.m. and Drake on Sunday, April 21 at 10 a.m.
The Redbirds are coming into this weekend on a four-game win streak after defeating Missouri State 5-2 in their last matchup to stay a perfect 3-0 in the MVC.
This is the last home matches for Seniors Jana Kustkova and Veronika Golanova, both of whom attributed a lot to the Redbirds success this season. Kustkova is undefeated at the No. 2 spot with her doubles partner Laura Fitzgerald. The No. 2 doubles pair were tabbed as the MVC Doubles Team of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Kustkova is second on the squad in the win column with 10 wins this season and the senior holds a 10-8 overall and 2-1 MVC record.
Golanova is currently undefeated in the MVC at the No. 1 singles spot, helping lead the 'Birds to their unblemished record. Golanova boasts an 8-6 record and has won Singles Player of the Week and Doubles Player of the Week with her partner Tara Damnjanovic this season.
Northern Iowa is currently 4-5 and 1-2 in MVC play. The Panthers are coming off of a second place finish last season at the MVC championship, losing to Missouri State. The Redbirds are 9-5 in the last 14 matchups against the Panthers and are looking to avenge their last season loss at the MVC Tournament.
Drake is currently 8-13 and 2-1 in the MVC. The Bulldogs ended last season on top of the MVC standings before falling to Missouri State in the MVC Tournament. The 'Birds are 10-6 in their last 16 matchups against the Bulldogs, including a lost to Drake last season 5-2.
After this weekend the Redbirds will travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to participate in the 2019 MVC Tournament.
