NORMAL, Ill. – The Redbirds had a successful Friday with wins against Eastern Illinois (6-1) and UIS (6-1) as they hosted their first home matches of the spring at the Bloomington Tennis Center.
"It was a good day for the guys, as we had some solid results. I thought we played some very good doubles, which was nice to see because we are still trying to figure out our best pairings," ISU head coach Mark Klysner said. "We are looking forward to tomorrow and keeping the momentum going."
In their first match of the day, the Redbirds played swept UIS in doubles action to take the first point of the match. Newcomer Melker Isaksson and Brandon Lew defeated Alex Chan and Oscar Toro for a 6-1 victory. In singles action, ISU won the final five pairings to come away with a win.
In Illinois State's second match against UIS, the Redbirds played tough to earn a 6-1 win. In doubles action, the duo of Diego Le Gal Perez and Isaksson defeated Daniel Hernandez and Christos Kyrillou, 6-1. During singles competition, Nam Pham earned a win against Christos Kyrillou (6-2, 6-1) as did Jorge Bartra as he defeated Mike Jansen (7-5, 4-6, 12-10).
The Redbirds will continue play Saturday at 11 a.m. against Western Michigan followed by a second match against Prairie State at 4 p.m. Both matches will be held at the Bloomington Tennis Center.
