MIC Honors Labat With Newcomer Of The Week Honors

NORMAL, Ill. – For the second time this season Illinois State freshman gymnast Angelica Labat has been honored by the Midwest Independent Conference, this time as the league's Newcomer of the Week for her performance last week in a victory over Northern Illinois.

The Chesapeake, Virginia, native continues to impress in her first competitive season for the Redbirds. She was previously awarded with MIC Performance of the Week honors after she recorded a career-best effort of 9.925 on beam to finish in second place for ISU in a tri-meet with Central Michigan and Michigan State two weeks ago.

Last Friday, Labat won the all-around for the second time this season and posted career-best efforts on three events as ISU took down in-state rival NIU. She tied for first on bars with a season-high 9.825 and finished first in the all-around with a 38.800 to help the Redbirds post a season-high team score of 193.625. Labat also tallied season-best efforts on bars (9.825) and floor as well (9.850) in the victory over the Huskies.

The Redbirds return to action Friday, Jan. 31, when they travel to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, to compete against MIC rival Southeast Missouri for the second time this season.
