NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State men's tennis team swept a doubleheader against the Illinois Institute of Technology and UIC on Saturday Feb. 15 at the Bloomington Tennis Center. The Redbirds picked up a 7-0 victory over IIT in the early match and earned a 4-3 victory against UIC in the second contest of the day.
"I'm very proud of the boys today. We gave up a tough doubles point, but credit to the guys for once again stepping up in the singles and taking care of business against UIC," head coach Mark Klysner said.
During Illinois State's first match against IIT, the Redbirds swept the Scarlet Hawks in singles and doubles action for the 7-0 win. In doubles competition, Pol Botifoll Rius and Nam Pham defeated Yousef Abdo and Andy Fang (IIT) 6-1 and the duo of Diego Le Gal Perez and Melker Isaakson took down Roman Shishlov and Alann Torres (IIT) 6-0.
In the second match of the day against UIC, the Redbirds struggled during doubles competition. Aleksa Lazarevic and Diego Emilio Moura Herrera came up short against UIC's Kasper Parlklo and Pelle Strandberg, 6-1. The duo of Jorge Adair Bartra Quispe and Zacharias Rankloo Rasmusson earned the 'Birds a doubles win (6-2) against Niko Wasilewicz and Anthony Nguye, but it was not enough as the Flames took the doubles point. During singles competition, Isaakson earned a win at the No. 4 singles spot to secure the match for the Redbirds, with Pham, Botifol Rius and Le Gal Perez also picking up victories for ISU.
The Redbirds continue their spring season next weekend in Chicago, when they play Chicago State on Saturday, February 22. That match will be followed by a doubleheader on Sunday, February 23, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, against Northern Illinois and Green Bay.
