NORMAL, Ill. –The Illinois State men's tennis team is back on the road this weekend for a pair of non-conference matches. The Redbirds travel to Chicago on Saturday to face off against Chicago State at 10 a.m., before traveling to Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Sunday for a doubleheader against Northern Illinois (10 a.m.) and host Green Bay (2 p.m.).
Redbird Notes:
The Redbirds went 2-0 last weekend, as they hosted UIC and IIT at the Bloomington Tennis Center. During Illinois State's first match against IIT, the Redbirds swept the Scarlet Hawks in singles and doubles action for the 7-0 win. In doubles competition, Pol Botifoll Rius and Nam Pham defeated Yousef Abdo and Andy Fang (IIT) 6-1 and the duo of Diego Le Gal Perez and Melker Isaakson took down Roman Shishlov and Alann Torres (IIT) 6-0. Overall, the Redbirds have won their last three matches overall and are currently 9-5 this spring.
About the Cougars:
The Cougars are currently 1-9 in their 2020 spring season and last played against the Redbirds in January, where they were defeated 7-0. The Cougars earned their first win of the spring season with a decisive 6-1 win over Prairie State College last Sunday at the Homewood-Flossmor Racquet and Fitness Center. The Cougars opened the match by winning the doubles point, thanks to decisive wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
About the Huskies:
The Huskies won three matches at home this past weekend, and improved their spring season record to 5-4 overall. The Huskies last competed against Eastern Illinoi,s where they won 7-0 not dropping any points. NIU won the doubles point from wins earned by sophomore Mikko Malinen and junior Victor Spolidorio at No. 1, as well as senior Bor Schweiger Muzar and sophomore David Pata at No. 2.
About the Phoenix:
The Green Bay Phoenix hold a 3-4 record this spring season. Last weekend, team competed against Omaha anddropped the first point of the day by losing in the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles spots. During singles action, the Phoenix conceded points in the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, but found their first point with Teddy Razaafindratsma winning the No. 5 singles 6-3, 6-1 to cut the Mavericks' lead to 1-3. Unfortunately, Omaha ended up taking the next point in No. 1 singles to ultimately earn the victory.
