NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State men's tennis dropped a tough match Saturday evening against DePaul in Chicago, Illinois by a final score of 4-3.
"What a great college match and atmosphere. We had a slow start in doubles, but boy did the guys kick up the intensity in singles and just go to war with these guys," head coach Mark Klysner said. "We left match points at number two singles but got very unlucky on those points and that's just how it goes sometimes. We will use this momentum and carry it into the next match."
DePaul swept the doubles matches to pick up the point at the start of the match. In singles competition, Pol Botifoll Rius secured the win at the No. 1 singles spot for the Redbirds with a three-set win over DePaul's Boris Spanjaard. At the No. 5 spot, Jorge Adair Bartra Quispe defeated Tripp Tuff in three sets, while freshman Nam Pham helped earn the Redbirds a point by defeating Fran Tonejc at the No. 6 spot.
The Redbirds will take a break from competition and head to Palmas Del Mar, Puerto Rico from March 7-14 for their spring training trip.
