YPSILANTI, Mich. – The action at the Eagle Invitational was busier on day one than expected, as forecasts for Sunday's inclement weather forced a change to the schedule for Friday and Saturday. The Redbirds competed in one round of doubles and two rounds of singles at the Chippewa Club and at Ypsilanti Community High School.
"This is our third straight week of competing and I'm really happy to see improvement across the board," ISU head coach Maja Kovacek said. "Two-day events are physically challenging, and we responded well today. We were able to pick up some good wins at the end of the day and head into tomorrow with some momentum."
Four Redbirds won a pair of singles matches Friday to advance to the championship of their respective flights on Saturday. Alexandra Abyasova picked up a pair of wins in Flight No. 2, Maria Potsi won twice in Flight No. 3, Tara Damnjanovic moved to the finals in Flight No. 4 and Elena Jankulovska punched her ticket to the finals in Flight No. 5 with two solid victories. Penelope Abreu also won her quarterfinal match in Flight No. 6, before falling in the semifinals.
The doubles tandems of Tijana Zlatanovic/Damnjanovic and Abyasova/Abreu each won their quarterfinal doubles matches to advance to the semifinals on Saturday. Each duo will have to win twice tomorrow in order to take wins in their respective flights.
